F'CIFIEF'T ElELHIIE'j' TEL Nci , =Ci7—'44C: I-] l'dr_ _a 1' 4f F' . Ci
The current plan for reclGimation of the benches calls for grading of fill at the
outside perimeter of the bench to achieve a moderate slope, using the material
thus excavated to construct a buttress along the toe of the out, then seeding the
area which has been graded.
George Wear says that the downslopes themselves have not been included in
the calculations of acreage to be vegetated on the grounds that these are pre-
law disturbances, and tho practical consideration that it would be infeasible in
any case.
'The grading concept tested at the #4 mine area included installation of
catchment basins at the base of the slope for sediment control. Sediment fills in
behind the catchment basins, and is later seeded. This concept could possibly
be employed as part of ro-clamation at other bench areas, below other
downslopes_
Backfill/grading
'The current approved plan of the (MLRD) permit calls for backfill of material at
the hillside behind the preparation plant. The material anticipated for backfill
includes coal washer refuse which was to have been stockpiled from the last
coal washer opeations, and rubble from the foundations of the buildings in the
preparation plant area. ,Additional soil was to be "borrowed" from some other,
unspecified source. We believe the transport of material for this purpose is a
waste of money, and would create a less stable hillside. Further, there are
scheduling problems in that we would like to cover most of the Sutey pile, whit
would be the source of washer refuse material, next year, and would like to star
on this hillside behind tho preparation plant either next year or in 1994. The
foundations from the buildings of the preparation, plant area will not be available
for tl-iis baukfili use for several years. Further, the "borrow" area would create
substantial surface disturbance and "borrow' material would be better used, in
any case, for topsoiling requirements.
Necessary grading can Le accomplished by use of a bulldozer or excavator to
round off the crest of the cut, using that material to fill in at the base, and
otherwise grading the slope to the desired contour.
The route followed by tho overland conveyor from the tunnel portal to the raw
coal storage area could, similarly, be contoured with use of a bulldozer or
excavator, without hauling in material for backfill purposes. Also, this area can
probably be successfully revegetated without bringing in topsoil,
At the raw coal storage areas some coal material remains on the ground.
Rather than haul it to the Sutey pile to cover it with soil material, we would
propose to push it up against the cut of the hillside and bury it there, with soil
2
