M
associated bench areas were reduced by backfilling and grading.
Grading to achieve desired drainage characteristics was
accomplished. The eleven acre area was ripped fertilized, seeded
and mulched. Approximate cost was $190,000. Contractor: Ray Ward
Trucking, Dolores, Colorado.
Experimental Practices: Experiments were conducted near Mines 1
and 2 in order to compare road reclamation practices, and to
attempt to generate native grass and forb stands on the mine bench
outslopes. Native plant seeds were collected and planted on steep
mine bench slopes under varying conditions. A large plot was
seeded with native seeds at another area in order to generate a
large seed source area. A half mile road segment was reclaimed to
the specifications of the 1996 road reclamation Project, except the
gradient was increased. Results of this grading practice will be
compared to that implemented north of the Rock Tunnel .
1997 Reclamation Goals
Roads Project: The roads to Mines 1, 2 and 4 will be reclaimed
using techniques similar to those used in 1996 . Approximately five
miles of roads will be reclaimed. An additional 1.5 miles of road
may be included.
Coal Stockpile/Warehouse Area Project: Approximately ten acres
of land will be reclaimed by demolishing concrete foundations,
achieving desired contours, creation of drainages and revegetation
of the affected areas.
Steep Slope Revegetation: A project designed to accomplish
revegetation of the steep slopes associated with four of the mine
areas is contemplated. Creation of flat spots on the outslopes,
fertilization, seeding and mulching will be required.
1997,/1998 Reclamation Goals
Wash Plant Area Project: This approximately twelve acre area
will require concrete demolition and disposal, slope reduction,
drainage control, limited topsoiling and revegetation of the entire
area. Structural demolition is still in progress.
All of the 1997 and 1998 Reclamation Goals are dependent upon the
Division receiving appropriate funding in a timely manner, and upon
structural demolition and removal being accomplished on schedule by
the independent salvage company.
