Area Seep Inventory
Page 2
The areas were inventoried by a combination of walking and driving.
Water courses were traced to their origin and mine dumps were
visually inspected. Samples were taken of seeps and mine portal
discharges that were found although some seep areas were only noted
for future reference and possible future sampling if warranted by
later observations (ie continuing flow, etc. )
Flow measurements and f ield parameters (PH, temperature and
conductivity) were taken at each sample site. Lab analysis was
used for basic water chemistry, metal content and bromide for the
first round of sampling. Basic water chemistry analysis will not
be done in future sampling rounds of these sites. A Baski 2"
collapsible cutthroat flume was used for small flows and a
Scientific Instruments Pygmy meter for the larger flows. Where
neither instrument could be used, the flows were estimated or
measured with a beaker and stopwatch.
Due to the elevation of the areas studied, snow was present until
July_ 1. Care was taken ' to be relatively certain that the seeps
sampled were groundwater and not a direct result of surface snow
melt. Conductivity measurements and up-gradient inspection were
used to make this determination.
SAMPLE SITE DESCRIPTION:
From the headwaters of Cement Creek to the American Tunnel:
o No definable groundwater seeps were found in Ross Basin, the
headwaters of Cement Creek.
o Sampled Mogul Mine #3 level (M#3) . There was no flow from
this portal due to blockage but water appears at the base of
the dump with the most probable source being these mine
workings. This flow was sampled and was also sampled in 1992.
o The hillside on both sides of Cement Creek between the Mogul
#2A and Mogul #3 levels is a continuous seep or marshy zone
where what is thought to be sub-surface runoff (ie not flows
from bedrock) surfaces. These seeps and marshy zones were not
sampled.
o Sampled Mogul Mine #2A level (M#2) . There was no flow
from this portal due to blockage but water appears on the west -
side of the dump with the most probable source being these
mine workings. This flow was sampled and was also sampled in
1992.
