Terry Tunnel Bulkhead
Page 2
An estimation of intact rock irregularities present was made from
the x- section data. This was done by:
1) measuring the perimeter at a section.
2) measuring the perimeter at that section of the next
section's intrusion into that area. This was done by
overlaying consecutive x- sections.
3) assuming the perimeter area between sections is the
average of the perimeters at each end of a section times
the distance between sections and the sum of section
perimeter areas is the total perimeter area within the
bulkhead.
Total perimeter area = c Pn + Pn +1 (D)
L 2
where P(n) = Perimeter at section n (ft)
D = distance between section n and section n +
1 (ft)
This gave a Total Perimeter Area of 286.7 sq.ft.
4) assuming that any intrusion into the overlain x- section
exists over the distance between sections, a value for
perimeter area of intact rock irregularity was obtained
for each section and the total perimeter area of rock
irregularity was assumed to be the sum of the values
obtained for each section.
Total Perimeter area of rock irregularity = PIn D
where PIn = Perimeter of section n that has a surface
within the area from section n + 1 when
overlaying section n (ft)
D = distance between section n and section n + 1
(ft)
This gave a Total Perimeter area of rock irregularity for
the bulkhead of 197.6 sq. ft.
The percentage of intact rock perimeter area irregularity
calculated by this estimation is 69% which is larger than the
required 101% and therefore a more detailed measurement and analysis
is not required.
