4.5 Sample Collection Protocol
The following guidelines should be incorporated into the sample collection protocol:
(1 ) Sample bottles are to be plastic (250 ml or 500 ml) and prerinsed with
distilled water.
(2) Collect two bottles from each site. Label with the following:
A. Site name (name of mine, spring, etc.)
B. Date, time
C. Map coordinates (or longitude and latitude)
D. Sample description (rainwater, mine water, snow, etc.)
(3) Archive one set of samples. Send the second set of samples to a
certified laboratory under chain-of-custody procedures.
(4) Fill two bottles with distilled water for use as trip blanks. Label as
"Distilled Water." Include date and time. Send one trip blank for
analysis. Archive the second sample.
(5) DO NOT store samples in same building with tracer.
(6) Bottles must be tightly sealed, but no refrigeration or special preservation
methods are needed.
4.6 Sample Analysis
Samples are to be analyzed by a certified laboratory using EPA method 300.0 (see
Appendix A). This ion chromatographic method is a recognized standard for the
analysis for bromide and allows detection of bromide to approximately 0.01 milligrams
per liter. The laboratory must provide documentation that their analytical scales have
been certified (calibrated against standards) on an annual basis.
sunny\wp\traci\2251 Morkplan.693 15
no simon HYDRO-SEARCH
