August 1994 -2- 933-2713.003
3.0 GEOLOGY
3.1 Field Activities
The field program for this project was performed between March 14 and 25, 1994 and consisted
of drilling seven boreholes at the Sunnyside Mine. Borehole details are given in Table 1. The
borehole drilling was conducted in order to characterize the stratigraphy of Cement Creek
sediments, verify the depth to bedrock, and verify the depth to groundwater in the sediments.
The drilling was performed by L.A. Smith of Grand Junction, Colorado, using an Acker drill
rig. Soil and rock samples were collected by continuous coring with HX rods in a 3.5 inch
diameter hole. Continuous collection of core samples allowed visual characterization and
logging of the materials in order to develop a vertical profile of the sediments. Samples were
classified in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. Representative samples of
clay and clayey gravel were also collected for laboratory testing. Borehole logs are included as
Appendix A.
The boreholes were drilled along two cross sections (A-A' and B-B'), nearly perpendicular to
Cement Creek, as shown on Figure 1.
Golder personnel designated the boreholes as BH-1 through BH-6. Sunnyside has subsequently
renamed those boreholes which were completed as piezometers using "A" and "B" prefixes.
The following table compares the Golder designations and the Sunnyside designations:
Golder Designation, Sunnyside Designation
BH-1 B-1
BH-1 A N/A
BH-2 B-2
BH-3 N/A
BH-4 N/A
BH-5 A-1
BH-6 A-2
Golder Associates
