After the meeting you asked that I send you details on the
tree planting project scheduled for this summer and fall, and a
short summary of the my talk. Both of these are included here.
Tree Planting. For over a year, the Division has been trying to
launch a volunteer tree planting effort. The goal of the project
is to establish seedling trees and shrubs in the vicinity of some
of the mine bench outslopes. Colorado Rocky Mountain School has
agreed to send ten student volunteers to the site on two different
occasions. These are August 23 and 24, and October 2 and 3. We
are hoping to supplement the CRMS volunteers with CVEPA and other
community volunteers. The Division will supply the trees and
shrubs, while the Forest Service will supply tools for planting.
Our goal is to plant a minimum of 5,000 trees and shrubs at Mines
1, 2, and 4, located in the central portion of Coal Basin. The
work areas are relatively level, but are at high elevation (9,000
to 10,000 feet) . Some areas may only be accessed by foot on
unimproved trails.
In order to provide enough trees, shrubs and tools, I will need to
have a fairly accurate estimate of the number of volunteers who
will participate on each of the four work days by August 1, 1997.
Coal Basin Status Update. In accomplishing reclamation of Coal
Basin, the primary goal of the Division is to alleviate the
environmental problems created by mining operations. Reclamation
1
