The widths of most of the haul roads were not reduced to 20 feet by DMG
(as stated in the MCR Reclamation Plan) because that would have significantly
increased the costs. And, replacing some of the fill material into the
cut is, in my opinion, probably the single most important
reclamation practice not done at the site that should have been
done.
Steep Slope Revegetation
Revegetation of long, angle of repose slopes at high elevation is one of
the most difficult of all reclamation tasks anywhere. Because of the extreme
difficulty of revegetating these slopes, the DMG has been experimenting with
different methods. They are now confident that they have an efficient and
effective recipe and are ready to proceed in earnest.
The method DMG intends to implement to revegetate these very difficult
sites is, in my opinion, sound, and will provide a good product for the money.
The DMG estimates that they can revegetate these cut and fill slopes for $2,280
and $1 ,710 per acre respectively. DMG's past record indicates that they
probably can do this work for these prices and they should be commended
because those prices are very reasonable.
Additional Reclamation not done with Bond Monies
Two additional reclamation tasks have been done at the site with grant
money and the DMG hopes to obtain other outside funds for at least one more
task. These tasks were not committed to in the reclamation plan because they
were on pre-law areas of the mine or were not obvious at the time the
reclamation plan was prepared, approved, and bonded.
8
