reclamation of this road segment will be limited to culvert removal, periodic rolled
dip construction, intermittent ripping and revegetation. This work will be
accomplished on Huntsman Ridge Road from Mine 4 to its intersection with a
previously existing road about one half mile west of the Huntsman Ridge crest.
The road west of this point appears to be stable. Reclamation work beyond the
anticipated area does not appear to be necessary, however an additional
observation of the road will be made prior to construction beginning in order to
ascertain whether any erosion or drainage control work is necessary.
Noxious Weed Control: Noxious weeds will be treated again in 2000. Areas of
infestation occur primarily in the vicinity of the Sutey Refuse Pile, on the Old
Refuse Pile, at the lower portion of Road E, on the Overland Conveyor Corridor
including areas near coal stockpile B, and near the Lamp House. Two treatments
are anticipated to be applied this year, one in late June and again in late August.
Sediment Pond Reclamation: The sediment ponds, excepting those that accept
mine water drainage, will be reclaimed in 2000. All of the sediment ponds,
excepting the Rock Tunnel Ponds (016) and with the possible exception of the
Mine 5 (017) pond, will be reclaimed this year. The reclamation concept is to
create maintenance free wetlands areas at each pond location for the benefit of
livestock and wildlife. The corrugated metal spillway at each pond will be
removed, and will be replaced by rock lined open channels. Earthen materials
generated as a result of the metal pipe extraction will be used as a soil substitute
at the pond margins and at pond access roads which need revegetation work.
The area surrounding the water line at each pond will be scarified and planted
with wetlands species.
Tree Planting: Trees will be planted in clumps throughout the previously
reclaimed lands. Four altitude and aspect specific species will be used. Planting
areas will primarily be at mine benches, on the refuse piles, at the Mine Facilities
Area, and along the road corridors. It is currently estimated that about 125 to
150 acres will be planted at a rate of 150 trees per acre.
Shrub Planting: As part of the Coal Basin Non-Point Source Grant, a large
volume of shrubs will be planted at the base of the Mines 1 and 3 outslopes.
This planting will be accomplished mainly by citizen volunteers using locally
obtained willow cuttings. The purpose of the planting effort is to establish natural
sediment barriers at the base of the target slopes. The Forest Service will be
available to participate in this effort, which is tentatively scheduled for August 19
and 20, 2000. It is hoped that Division personnel will also be available to help
with volunteer transportation and organization, as they were for the 1997 tree
planting project.
Sutey Ditch 8 Reconstruction: Ditch 8 is the steep down-drain located on the
south facing slope of the Sutey Refuse Pile. This ditch was originally constructed
in the fall of 1995, but does not function properly. Reconstruction is aimed at
