Modification of Stream Diversion Design at Sutey Pile_ <br /> The final reclamation of the Sutey refuse pile was started in the <br /> summer of 1993 . The stream diversion that exists at the north end <br /> of the refuse area is being designed for a permanent channel that <br /> will be stable , free of maintenance and compatible with the post- <br /> mining land use . <br /> The area above the diversion consists of approximately 285 acres of <br /> forested slopes . Past estimates have resulted in a peak flow for <br /> this drainage basin of 105 . 3 cfs . This amount was stated in the <br /> June 1 , 1989 letter from William Crick of MLRD to Lew Thompson of <br /> Mid-Continent Resources , Inc. This peak flow will be used for the <br /> revised design . <br /> 1 <br /> The diversion will begin at the extreme northernmost point of the <br /> refuse area as shown on the enclosed Exhibit 1 titled Sutey Refuse <br /> Pile- Final Reclamation Plan . The length of the diversion is 1240 <br /> feet and the total drop over the entire length is 58 feet . The <br /> average grade of the ditch is 4 . 7%. Exhibit 2 shows the profile of <br /> the diversion . At the end of the diversion , the stream enters an <br /> existinc culvert under the forest access road . After the culvert , <br /> the stream enters Coal Creek . <br /> It is felt that natural material ditch liners which allow <br /> vegetation to grow through the liner are best suited for this <br /> design . Such a material is the C 125 liner which is made of 100% <br /> coconut fiber sewn between two heavyweight polyester nets . The <br /> enclosed Gages from the manufacturer descr ! L-e this material in <br /> detail . This design is more environmentally desirable than large <br /> rip-rap in the stream bed and is also free of erosion for the 100 <br /> year - 24 hour storm event . In this application , it is particularly <br /> desirable because the stream has a low trickle flow which will help <br /> in achieving rapid revegetation of the stream bed . <br /> The construction of the channel will begin by using earthmoving <br /> equipment to excavate the desired trapezoidal channel . Then the <br /> channel bottom and sides will be seeded with a mixture of smooth <br /> brome , timothy and orchardgrass at the rate of 60 1 bs ner acre . <br /> This will ensure rapid revegetation at Retardance Class B . <br /> Immediately following reseeding , the fabric will be stapled to the <br /> channel bottom.
