8. Alcng numerous sEcllenS - :he road surface or from
overtopped di tch sagmrncs has c:,c road for some distance and
eventually has run off the road in an uncontrolled manner, resulting in
fill slope erosion . Rill erosion due to such uncontolled drainage has
occurred between Sta. 90+00 and 70+00, Sta. 50+00 and 47+00. and Sta.
35+00 and 32,00.
9. At approximately Sta. 87+00, a bedrock outcrop has apparently prevented
ditch excavation and has resulted in ditch overtopping.
10. From approximately Sta. 25-00 around the Arctic Circle switchback, flows
have escaped the ditch as a result or sediment accumulation and resulted
in rilling of the road surface .
Road B
11 . All along Road B, sediment has been deposited in the timbered buffer zone
along the South Fork of Dutch Creek as a result of uncontrolled runoff
from the road surface, overtopped ditches and culvert discharge.
12. As with other road ditches , the Road B ditch is alternately scoured in
some segments and there is evidence of previous debris accumulation and
overtopping in other locations . Rock checks required by the approved
plan to slow velocities have not been installed . Ditch scouring is
severe for most of the distance between Sta. 35+00 and culvert B-3 at
Sta. 24+10. Ditch flows through this segment have cut into the toe of
the cut slope , resulting in continuing sloughage of soil from the cut
into the ditch. At approximately Sta. 30+00, the ditch has been
partially filled in with sediment from erosion within the B-5 drainage,
above.
Road G
13. In several locations , road drainage ditches have not been constructed or
maintained to provide design capacity. The following areas of violation
were noted:
a. Various road segments on the upper portion of the road above
Culvert G-24, including sections of the road ditch which drain into
the Mine 5 sediment pond within the Mine 5 disturbed area.
b. Ditch section between Sta 115-00 and Culvert G-18 was partially
filled in, in places , and had overtopped in the past, resulting in
some flow across the road and over the outslope .
-7-
