STATE OF COLORADO
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION oF.cozo
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,CO 80203
303 866-3567 i876•
FAX: 303 832-8106
Roy Romer,
Governor
Michael B.Long,
May 26, 1992 Division Director
Mr. Tom Kuekes
U.S. Forest Service Sopris District
620 Main Street
Carbondale, Colorado 81623
RE: Mid-Continent Resources , (Our File No. C-81-017)
Dear Mr. Kuekes:
This letter is written as a follow-up to the meeting held on May 12, 1992 in
Glenwood Springs between the various regulatory agencies associated with the
Coal Basin Mine.
During the meeting, representatives from the Forest Service expressed some
concern about the Division' s intentions with respect to the road system at the
Coal Basin Mines . We would therefore like to extend an opportunity for your
agency to comment on the road violation abatements and subsequent revision
(Permit Revision - 02, currently being processed) . We would especially
encourage you to comment on the revision as we continue reviewing it. Once
approved the revision will become a binding part of the mining and reclamation
permit; as such the current public comment period provides an excellent
opportunity for suggestions and positive change. Please understand that the
mining act and regulations we work under do limit the scope of our abilities
somewhat, but generally allows enough flexibility to reach creative solutions
for resource development and environmental protection to exist hand-in hand .
I sent a copy of our adequacy review of Mid-Continent' s initial submittal to
Sam Schroder of your office. We would like to approve this revision by
July 2, 1992 (providing, of course that it is comprehensive and approvable) ,
so please return any comments as soon as possible. You will also have an
opportunity to comment once a decision is rendered .
In closing, I would like to thank you for organizing the recent meeting. If
you have any questions about the meeting or the revision please call .
Sincerely,
Anthony J . Waldron
Reclamation Specialist
AJW/eke
Enclosure(s)
3245F
