Chapter II
c. Non-coal Refuse Disposal.
Non-coal waste will be handled and disposed in accordance with CMLRB regulations, section
4.11.4 - Disposal of Non-coal Waste.
(1) Solid Non-coal Waste Disposal.
Solid non-coal waste will be disposed in the approved solid waste disposal sites, which is
situated at the toe of the rock tunnel fill.
Waste material will be covered over and compacted when ground conditions are sufficiently
dry, during the period after snowmelt and prior to snowfall. The operator will avoid coverage
and compaction when ground conditions are wet or snowcovered and frozen. When the mine
is operating coverage and compaction of the trash pile will be done monthly during the months
July through October, and as ground conditions allow during other months.
(2) Liquid Waste Disposal.
Petroleum products are collected and stored temporarily at the maintenance shop prior to
being removed from the mine site for re-cycling. Oil cans and drums, containers for lubricant
and hydraulic fluid will be collected at designated areas prior to being removed from the mine
site for disposal. Concrete containment structures will be installed at the rock tunnel and
central yard complex areas as part of preparation for resumption of mining. Such
preparations are anticipated during fall, 1992. These areas are designated on the revised map
11-13-7 as "petroleum containment areas."
VV
ZIP
9. UNDERGROUND DEVELOPMENT WASTE ` r
a. Rock Disposal Area
Material excavated in the construction of the rock tunnel has been placed in the designated
tunnel fill area. Mid-Continent estimates that approximately 365,000 cu. yds. of material has
been placed in this facility. The approved waste design for this facility has a capacity of 1.08
million cu. yds., so there is substantial excess capacity in the facility.
Mid-Continent anticipates that material excavated in further underground development work on
the tunnel and on the raw coal storage facility will be placed on the approved tunnel waste
disposar area until the facility reaches capacity.
In construction of the current pile, the tunnel spoil material was spread on the waste pile so as
to maintain a perimeter slope at the ratio of 2h:1v or less.
44
Revised 6192
