SECTION 5 - HIGH, THIN (SLIVER) FILL
GENERAL. High , thin fill on a mine bench was end-dumped on a steep
slope below the mine bench or road. The material for this
fill was obtained from the mine bench excavation. The fill
is very thin (sliver type) ; it does not comprise a struc-
tural fill (the thickness is limited to several feet
only) . It can rather be classified as a spoil deposit. It
was dumped usually on a very steep natural slope formed
either by outcrops of rocks or by occasional patches of
colluvial soils or talus deposits. No preparation of
foundations for the fill was performed.
STABILITY AND OTHER PROBLEMS. The natural slopes below the fill are
frequently steep (30 - 40 degrees) , locally steeper than
angle of repose of the fill. The fill is spread in a very
thin layer , which is marginally stable. Sloughing and
erosion are the most important stability problems; there
is no danger of a large-scale failure. Blocks of different
sizes are frequently segregated with accumulations of
large blocks at the toe of the fill .
RECLAMATION CONCEPT: Minimize erosion and sloughing potential by
improving the surface drainage and preventing surface
water from areas above the fill from entering the fill .
Eliminate sharp fill crest .
METHOD OF RECLAMATION: Construct diversion ditches above fill
crest . Contour the fill crest to a rounded shape .
ANALYTICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Analyze existing stability conditions.
Evaluate surface water inflows into fill area and analyze
the effects of surface water diversion.
PROPOSED LOCATION: C-Road , STa 72+00 to 73+00
