June 5, 2012 C- 1981 - 046 /Sunlight Mine JRS
RECLAMATION SUCCESS (cont.): - The lower portal area was well vegetated and stable and no erosional
problems were noted. The remaining road to the lower portal area is very well vegetated and stable. The road is
impassable due to the amount of vegetation, including large stands of willows. Surface runoff from the road flows
to the lower portal bench area. At the lower bench area there is a large berm (approximately four feet high) that
directs all runoff to the north. Discharge is into the undisturbed area to the east and ultimately into Fourmile
Creek. There was no erosion or sediment along the road, below the road or along the lower portal area berm. The
lower portal bench was also well vegetated and stable, with no erosional problems noted. Surface runoff from the
lower portal bench flows either along the large berm discussed above or into a sump that is located just below the
sealed portal entry. Approximately 1/3 of the runoff flows along the berm and 2/3 of the runoff flows into the
sump. Runoff that flows into the sump will flow into the undisturbed area then into a small channel that was
constructed for the Fourmile gauging station then into the Fourmile Creek. There was no sediment in the sump or
at the outlet area of the sump going into the undisturbed area. As stated above, there was also no sediment seen
along the berm or in the undisturbed area where runoff from the berm is directed. Based on site inspection, there
were no off -site impacts at the lower portal area or road as a result of the reclamation.
- Overall, the reclamation at the Sunlight Mine is doing well. The entire site remains stable and there are
no erosional problems at the site. There were no signs of any off -site impacts at either the upper portal area
or the lower portal area as a result of the reclamation.
SLIDES and DAMAGE - Rule 4.12:
- The collapsed lower portal area has possibly caved in a bit more since my last inspection. It appears as though
the timbers that were in the cribbing above the portal have fallen more. The block wall remains intact, so there is
no access to the mine, from this entry, at this time.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED: None
This concludes the 5 June 2012 Sunlight Inspection report.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 3 of 8
