INTEROFFICE CORRESPONDANCE JUN 0 1986
r F ;
Date: May 26, 1986
To: Doug Bowman
From: Scott Jones
Subject : Sedimentation Pond Inspection, May 1986
On May 6, 13 and 19, 1986, an inspection was made of all
Mid-Continent Resources Coal Basin Sedimentation Ponds . The
inspection was made by myself, a Registered Professional Engineer
in the State of Colorado. I have had over five years experience
in the design, construction, and maintenance of sedimentation
ponds .
The purpose of this inspection was to-ensure that all of
the ponds were stable and hazard free and to satisfy the require-
ments of Rules 4. 05 . 6( ii ) (c) and 4 . 05 . 9( 10) (b ) of the Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Division . The inspection consisted of a
visual examination of embankments , spillways and outlets ; and
measurement of water and sediment levels and discharge volumes .
Water levels are based on past survey information. Sedimentation
levels were estimated based on a prodding stick and information
from you concerning the last cleanout date for each pond.
Several deficiencies were noted on a few of the ponds. The
attached table summarizes the status of each pond at the time of
inspection and the deficiencies that were noted.
The seep at the toe of the Redwood Tank Pond is the most
serious problem noted in the inspection . An investigation should
be made to determine if this seep is coming from groundwater or
from the pond. If it is determined that the seep is of pond
origin, remedial action should be taken to stop this flow.
I certify that the Coal Basin mine site sedimentation ponds
have been inspected to the best of my ability and, with the
exception noted above, are in accordance with the Colorado Mined
Land Reclamation Division ' s rules and regulations .
UDO REG
..............
C'C Ti'Sl
--..
James 0 e
'22 3
cc.
