TASK 7 LOW WATER CROSSINGS
Two low water crossings are to be constructed within the Project Area, one on the main Sutey
access road, and one on Road A.
A large culvert is in place under the Main Sutey access Road near the confluence of Ditches 1
and 8, immediately south of the Sutey Refuse Pile. This culvert is vulnerable to blockage by
debris. Therefore, it is to be replaced by an armored low water crossing. The culvert will be
removed and the adjacent concrete will be demolished and removed per Tasks 5, Culvert
Removal, and Task 2, Demolition, respectively. The other low water crossing will be constructed
near the second switchback on Road A. PROJECT MANAGER will mark the location of each
low water crossing in the field prior to construction beginning.
Specifications
The low water crossings shall be constructed to the specifications of Figure 4, Low Water
Crossing. The crossings will be nearly perpendicular to the length of the road, and will have a fall
of five percent (5%) across its axis. Ingress and egress routes shall be no steeper than 6H:1 V.
The crossing shall be the width of the road above and below the crossing. Durable rock shall be
placed within the crossing and on the sides. The rock shall be placed as a blanket with a coarse
of screened one inch (1") underlying a coarse of screened two inch (2") rock. A course of four
inch (4") rock shall be placed over the other two (2) courses at the base of the crossing.
Measurement and Payment
Payment shall be made per low water crossing installed. Payment shall be made at the
unit price established in the Bid Schedule, items 7 A and B. The unit prices bid will
cover all costs for excavation, and rock placement per specifications. The lump sum
bid shall be considered full compensation for all equipment and materials necessary
and incidental to completing the low water crossings to the specifications of this Task.
Payment shall be as this Task is completed and approved by the PROJECT
MANAGER.
TASK 8 SURFACE CHANNELS
Two surface channels will be constructed as a part of this Task, one which will drain the Old Coal
Storage Area, and one at the Sutey Refuse Disposal Area.
Sutey Refuse Disposal Area
An existing surface channel, Ditch 8, located on the south facing slope of the Sutey Refuse Pile,
will be rebuilt. The channel is non-functional in its present location and condition, as the flow
tends to migrate against and into the toe of the adjacent coal refuse. The ditch will be
reconstructed and relocated to the following specification.
NOTE that Ditch 8 construction must be completed within the first ten (10) days after receipt of
the Notice to Proceed. Construction must be accomplished so that the original ditch continues to
convey water flows until the end of the Project. At that time, the original ditch will be eliminated
and water will be allowed to flow into the new ditch.
Ditch 8 is an approximately 800 feet long ditch, the upper 200 feet being relatively gentle in
gradient, while the lower 600 feet is very steep. The replacement ditch will be constructed so
14
