I . Soils Survey
A Class IV soil survey was conducted of the Mid-Continent
Resources loadout area near Carbondale, Colorado in May, 1981 .
The soils are all basically the same with variations in
texture and depth due mainly to slope differentials . The
soils are probably derived from the rock formations behind
the area which are mostly sandstone and a few Mancos shale
outcrops .
Since the area is relatively small, differences in soil
type are denoted by numbers .
Soil 1 : This soil is characterized mainly by cuts and
fills of a sandy loam overlain by a thin organic material .
Vegetation is sparse, and most of it is occupied by roads
and buildings .
Soil 2: The soil is found on a bench above the road
leading in to the area . It is a slightly heavier soil than is
Type 1, and may be derived from the shale. Its vegetation is
mainly grass .
Soil 3 : This soil is prevalent on steeper slopes behind
soil Type 2 . It is slightly shallower than is soil 2, and has
a more sage and pinyon type of vegetation. It is sandy loam .
All of the soils are relatively shallow and are under-
lain by sandstone and fragments of sandstone .
1
10
