The protection of summer big-game habitat was the critical element in developing this
alternative. As a result the Middle Thompson-So. Branch Manaaement Unit (I-3) was estab-
lished to adequately protect these wildlife considerations. Perham Creek Management Unit
(I-1), Coal Basin Management Unit (I-2), and Coal Basin Management Unit (T-2) would not
change from Alternative A.
The Perham Creek Roadless Area (I-1) was evaluated under all alternatives. The significant
factors influencing management direction are as follows:
-The narrow-type shape, containing a relatively small area of 16,000 acres is not con-
ducive to managing the area for the wilderness values.
-There are ten 'Wilderness and Primitive Areas consisting of 1 ,C61 ,407 acres within 150
ml es radius to meet ouolic demands for wilderness ocoor,,un ti es. ;n addition, the
Maroon Bells-Snowmass and Chair Mountain New Stud reas contain 95,965 acres.
-ihe Pernam Creek Road less Area as defined in 1971 aid contain, and still does include
man-made roads providing access to adjoining private lands. This was the basic reason
for adjusting acreage to meet suitability criteria.
-Opportunities for solitude are limited due to size, shape and proximity to State
Highway 133.
-Scenic ^utilities and var4etv of landscape are not significant enough to warrant
wilderness ce5ignation.
Using this information, the management emphasis of this alternative and the innerent
characteristics of the Perham Creek area for backceuntry experience would compliment each
other in a satisfactory manner.
Considering the issues to be resolved, the coals and objectives developed and the capa-
bilities of the land to produce certain commodities, this alternative best meets the
desired management direction.
Goner&] Emonasis: Maximum development of livestock forage, -ocd ;roducts, water ,yield and wildlife
values, with increasing emonasis on controlling vehicular access.
Effects: -Protect and enhance wildlife haoitat by controlling access into Middle 4
Thompson and South Branch Creeks. !
-Permits intensive t,mcer management practices to maintain a healthy forest,
contributing to esthetic, recreation, wildlife and watershea values.
Ke option °or expansion of the exisrs Sunl r_ht ski area to 3000 PACT
AM nrnf ar•c ',• a tc
r.n oven. r'eC SC' 3^eII Or Ul oomint 0
3000 2ACT.
-mmunity growth would not be stimulated at a rate which could be a burcen to
local government.
-provides for 1Z,2200 acres of Pernam Creek roadless area.
-increase Annual 'dater Yield.
-Provides for continued energy oevelooment.
-Use of the transportation system beyond the Themoson Creek Ditch by vehicles
for general enjoyment and s,gntsee,ng will not be oermitted.
-Nineteen miles of additional roadway would oe necassary, taking 104 acres of
National ;crest out of production.
-increased recreation adjacent to State Highway 133 could affect the natural
environment.
-:later duality may be temocrar!ly reduced.
--In Coal Basin and Sunlight, forvo deveiooments other than those comoatible wit.'A
winter spores.
-The•natirRa-ppearing landscape will be altered.
jl►•rfIJaS 201/
