'Copter-served skiing - Canadian Rockies style - within a fifteen
minute radius would be quite limited and uneconomical based on experience
at Aspen and Crested Butte during the past decade due to the lack of
long, open slopes with sufficient vertical drop. Furthermore, the best
of the slopes such as the basins on Chair and Ragged Mountains to the
south, and those to the east in the Snowmass Mountain-Hagerman Peak-
Hayden Peak country are "off-limits" due to the wilderness classification
and restrictions on all motorized equipment. Snowmobile use would be
limited due to the avalanche hazards along most of the mine haul roads,
and the conflicts with lift-served and cross country skiing.
The summer recreation potential is also somewhat limited except for
hiking, horseback riding, pack trips and big game hunting in the Fall in
the country north of Coal Creek. Fishing is non-existent unless a few
small reservoirs as proposed for storage to supplement established water
rights are constructed and stocked.
Recreation residences and some year-round dwellings and condominium
units could be constructed adjacent to the base or preparation plant
area, on parts of the Sutey tract, and on the 160 acres tract in Section
4 if a paved road is constructed to the property. However, the most
desirable area for such facilities would, of course, be immediately west
of Redstone on the leased property in the southwest quarter of Section
17 above the flood plain of Coal Creek.
-15-
