The Hauk study recommends a base area in Sec . 4 ,
some two miles from the preparation plant area , and notes
that :
"The terrain, old railroad grade and adjacent aspen-
covered slopes that are relatively gentle and com-
pletely free of avalanche hazards could be used for a
network of maintained cross country ski trails similar
to the successful operation at Ashcroft south of Aspen .
"The location also provides an excellent distant view
of the East Peak country back or east of Redstone as
well as the precipitous slopes and peaks immediately to
the south toward Huntsman Ridge .
"Guided and signed cross country ski trail possi-
bilities for day-long tours could include :
--From the Section 4 site north to Dexter Park and
down Dexter Creek into the South Branch of Thompson
Creek.
--From McClure Pass north to the head of Hayes
Creek, then east along the Hayes Creek-Coal Creek
divide to the slope below or west of the 9 , 663 ' point
in Section 19 and then north-westerly to the plant or
base area . "
From: HAUK STUDY
Alternate sites are being considered for a cross-
country center . One site would utilize the No . 5 mine
portal area and , potentially , buildings , for the center .
The No . 5 mine road would provide access . Selection of the
site would be in keeping with the Mid-Continent planning
policy : namely , to utilize existing disturbed areas for ski
facilities wherever possible .
The alternate site , as suggested by the Hauk
study , would be the base recommended for the cross-country
ski trails -- namely , in Sec . 4 at the junction of Coal and
-30-
