for the Thompson Creek planning unit , which includes Coal
Basin, stated :
"There is one existing ski area and three inventoried
potential winter sports sites within the planning unit .
The Sunlight Peak and Twin Peaks inventoried ski areas
have not been proposed for development in this plan due
to environmental , social and economic associated impacts .
The Coal Basin inventoried ski area has been retained
to protect this development potential . . . . Other
winter recreation uses include cross-country , snow-
mobiling , snowshoeing , and photography . "
From: DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL
STATEMENT , THOMPSON
CREEK LAND USE
PLAN
Consequently, Mid-Continent , in long-range plan-
ning for the post-mining uses of the Coal Basin , requested
recently that a study be done of the feasibility of developing
the area for winter recreational use , as suggested by the
Forest Service. (See Appendix VI . D . 1 . )
The study , done by Paul Hauk, concluded that :
"A medium-size ski area development on portions of the
Coal Basin area affected by the coal mining operations
is a feasible and appropriate postmining use of the
terrain, existing facilities and the land owned or
controlled by Mid-Continent Resources , Inc . It is also
an appropriate and recommended future use of the
intermingled federal land (National Forest) as stated
in the Draft Environmental Statement for the "Thompson
Creek Land Use Plan" prepared by the U. S . Forest
Service and submitted to the Council on Environmental
Quality in August , 1976 . "
From: HAUK STUDY
Mr . Hauk retired in 1977 from the U. S . Forest
Service. He was the staff officer in charge of the Recrea-
tion, Land Uses, Minerals and Watershed Management functions
-10-
