Site Reclamation Activity
4/94 - 3/95
Page 11
MAYFLOWER MILL AREA - Cont
5) planting of fireweed and lupine seeds across the area.
Planned activity for 1995 includes;
1) donation of the mill buildings and contained property to the
San Juan County Historical Society has been approved by the
Society' s Board of Directors. Transfer will need to be
approved by DMG and MLRB.
2) site monitoring and maintenance.
MONITORING - Water Quality
Included in the Appendix is water quality data for;
1) Mayflower Mi llsite area
a) Animas River above (AR 3. 5) and below (AR 4) complex
b) Boulder Creek above (BC1) and below (BC2) tailings ponds.
c) Monitoring wells on the banks of the Animas River down
gradient from Tailings Pond #3 (EOWM1 and EOWM2) .
d) Diversion ditch flow between Tailings Pond #3 and
Tailings Pond #4 upgradient of TP#3 (SCTP31) and before
entry to Animas River (SCTP32) .
2) American Tunnel Area
a) Cement Creek above (CC1/CC1A) and below (CC2) complex.
b) Springs in the area of the waste dump (ATS1, ATS2) .
3) Eureka Creek between Sunnyside Basin and the Terry Tunnel
(EC1) .
Discussion:
Water quality monitoring of each of the sites listed above
shows varying results. In the Mayflower Mill area, zinc and
manganese concentrations in Boulder Creek and Animas River
waters appear to increase during spring flows; the amount of
increase in each spring season appears to vary year to year,
with no consistent trend established. Additional site work is
planned in 1995 to try to document and understand the water.
quality trends in this area.
The American Tunnel site monitoring shows general stream
improvement due to the influence of the treated American
Tunnel discharge on stream quality.
