Site Reclamation Activity
_ 4/95 - 3/96
Page 3
Reclamation and environmental work at this site consisted of;
1) general site cleaning through the further reduction of
materials and equipment no longer required for operations.
These items were either sold, donated, recycled through a
metal recycler or disposed of via the local landfill operation
(ie wood, paper, etc. ) .
2) completion of the removal of historic Lead Carbonate tailings
in and under the waste dump. This project was started in
1994. In order to remove the tailings, it was necessary to
almost completely remove the mine waste dump. All material
removed was taken to Tailings Pond #4 in the Mayflower Mill
area and used to bring a portion of the pond surface to its
anticipated final grade. Alkaline material was added to this
material at the pond to neutralize the acidity of the material
prior to capping with overburden material.
3) improvement to stormwater runoff controls.
4) partial installation of upland subsurface water interception
and diversion (TR-18) . This installation was approximately 80
percent completed during the 1995 report year.
5) the stabilization of Cement Creek's bank on the permit
boundary from the County road culvert to the northwestern
permit boundary (pre AM-004) . This was done by slope
reduction to 2:1 and rip-rap placement. Corp of Engineer
approval was obtained under a Nationwide Permit.
6) amendment with limestone 1-3 tons per acre, seeding (25 lbs
pls per acre) with the Mountain Mix (seed mix in Appendix A) ,
fertilization with liquid fertilizer (32-0-0) and application
of 1 ton per acre of hay mulch to the waste dump area, Lead
Carbonate tailings area and half of the stabilized bank of
Cement Creek.
7) treating the water discharge from the portal according to the
CDPS Permit for this discharge. This treatment includes
periodic cleaning of the settling ponds with a mudcat dredge
and tanker trucks. The material removed was hauled to the
Mayflower Mill - Tailings Pond #4.
There were no permit exceedences during the 1995 reporting
year.
8) switching the source of water treatment plant make-up water to
the existing surface source from the underground source behind
the tunnel bulkhead site.
