Site Reclamation Activity
April 1999 - March 2000
Page 10
even though basically all of the stream flow has been treated
from August through the end of April, since 1996 except for
1999 . In 1999, Sunnyside suspended Cement Creek water
treatment on June 1, 1999 and resumed treatment on
November 22 , 1999.
Suspension of treatment is at Sunnyside' s option, under the
Consent Decree, and in 1999 since the underlying reason for
Cement Creek treatment (potential impact from Sunnyside's mine
and tailings remediation projects) no longer existed,
treatment was suspended. The lower American Tunnel water was
still treated according to the requirements of the CDPS
discharge permit.
Monitoring data for Cement Creek quality above the site (CC1)
shows an increase in metal concentrations above previous years
starting in October 1999 . The seep monitoring samples
(Appendix B) indicate that although numerous sites had above
average flows due to the wetter than normal season, the most
notable was the Mogul Level No. 1 (M-1) . This increased flow
was reported to DMG as required in TR-14. It is not certain if
the increased flow is the result of the heavier than normal
rainfall or related to the flooding of the Sunnyside Mine
workings which required reporting. Therefore, Sunnyside
temporarily resumed Cement Creek treatment to counter the
effects of the increased flow until more information could be
gained. Because of snowfall and loss of access for the winter
months, this could not occur until the 2000 summer season.
The seep ATS2, originally from the toe of the American Tunnel
waste dump, has maintained the level of improvement first seen
after completion of the waste dump reclamation. The seep ATS1
appears to have disappeared or relocated due to the
reclamation of the waste dump.
3) Terry Tunnel/Lake Emma
Eureka Creek monitoring above the Terry Tunnel continues to
show the same level of improvement, as compared to previous
years.
4) Mine Pool
The Terry Tunnel and American Tunnel bulkhead mine pool water
quality samples submitted with this report reflect the quality
of water behind the bulkheads.
