TAILINGS POND NO. 4 AREA - Plate No. 3
The vegetation planted during the 1990 reporting year is doing well
on three - quarters of the pond slopes. The remaining one - quarter,
although replanted in June, 1991 is doing poorly. Soil samples
were taken and sent to the CSU Soil Testing Lab for analysis (see
Appendix). The barren area shows a high lime requirement which is
the probable cause of a lack of growth. Site inspection shows that
there was pyrite naturally occurring in a small area of the borrow
area used to cover the slopes. The area affected by the pyrite
will require neutralization with limestone and replanting.
The borrow area behind Tailings Pond No. 4 was expanded to provide
material for covering Tailings Pond No. 2. The additional
disturbed area is approximately 1.5 acres. The monitoring points
for settlement monitoring were surveyed. A copy is included in the
Appendix. There does not appear to be excessive movement based on
this data.
Planned Activity for 1992:
1) Addition of lime /limestone for amendment as required
(see Appendix). Total addition will be spread over
several years in areas that contain vegetation.
2) Replanting of areas of poor growth.
3) Fertilization as recommended by soil analysis.
4) Usage of the pond area for deposition of sludge from the
mine water treatment ponds as approved in TR -12.
TAILINGS POND NO. 3 AREA - Plate No. 3
No activity occurred at this site except for deposition of sludge
from mine water treatment ponds. Since approval of TR -12 this area
will be used for storm water containment, spill containment (in the
event of reopening) and mine water treatment sludge deposition in
the event that Tailings Pond No. 4 is not available.
The area that was previously seeded with no germination was
inspected and soil samples were sent in for analysis. It appears
that failure was probably due to a combination of too hard of a
surface for root establishment and acidic soil conditions.
Planned Activity for 1992:
1) Amendment and scarifying of soil.
2) Seeding of slopes with the Mountain Mix specified in our
permit.
3) Fertilization as recommended (see Appendix).
