t 1
Site Reclamation Activity
Page 5
TAILINGS POND NO. 4 AREA - Plate No. 3
The vegetation planted during the 1990 reporting year is continuing
to do well over three-quarters of the pond slopes. The remaining
one-quarter was treated with limestone (2-5 tons/acre depending on
vegetation) , fertilized with liquid fertilizer (40N 45P 50K) and
reseeded. The work was completed in June, 1992 . Growth by the end
of the season appears to be improved by the lime treatment. The
seed mix used was the "Mountain Mix" in the reclamation plan (copy
of seed mixture is in the Appendix) at a rate of 22 lb/acre.
In addition, Aspen seedlings were planted on the slopes in the fall
(October 1992) .
The borrow area behind Tailings Pond No. 4 was used for material to
cover Tailings Ponds No. 1 and No. 3 . The backslope (anticipated
to be the permanent final slope) above the area was covered with
topsoil stripped initially from the site and seeded with the
"Mountain Mix" in October 1992 . Seeding was at a rate of 22
lbs/acre.
The settling ponds across Hwy. 110 and just south of Tailings Pond
#4 were cleaned and regraded to eliminate the ponds. This project
was not completed due to snow in the fall .
Planned activity for 1993 includes :
1) additional limestone treatment of those area requiring
treatment .
2) maintenance of the vegetation as required.
3) usage of the pond area for deposition of sludge from the mine
water treatment ponds (Terry Tunnel and American Tunnel) .
4) completion of the grading and planting of the former settling
pond area just across Hwy 110 and south of Tailings Pond #4.
TAILINGS POND NO. 3 AREA - Plate No. 3
Activity at this site during the 1992 reporting year consisted of
capping the pond with overburden material from the borrow area by
Tailings Pond #4. The overburden cap was placed 2 to 8 feet thick
so that the surface slopes to the back of the pond to a ditch that
drains to the storm-water interception ditch between Tailings Pond
#3 and Tailings Pond #4 . Most of this surface was seeded with the
"Mountain Mix" in late November, 1992. The seeding rate was 22
lbs/acre. The side-slopes of the ditch were not completed due to
weather conditions .
