American Tunnel Portal Area - Plate No. 1 (continued)
General site clean-up was accomplished during the summer months.
Metal material was separated and hauled away by a recycler and
other material (mostly old track ties) was hauled to tailings
Pond No. l for burial .
A perforated pipe was placed around the top of the waste dump in
November of 1989 (as suggested by the MLRD) in order to collect
seepage water for monitoring. This will also provide seepage
collection in the event the dump is expanded . Additional work
will be dependent on the monitoring results. Very little waste
was placed on the dump during the 1989 reporting year .
The gated irrigation pipe to spread influent water across Pond#1
(TR 10) was installed during November of 1989. This system has
improved the solids settling characteristics of the settling pond
and had a positive effect on achieving consistent predictable
water quality.
The first biomonitoring sample , now required by our NPDES permit,
was taken during March of 1990. Although there were some
irreqularities with the hardness of water used by the labs during
the test, it appears that the water discharged after treatment is
not acutely toxic. More information will be generated to verify
this as the program advances . A sample of CC-1 was tested at
this same time showing Cement Creek above the American Tunnel
discharge to be acutely toxic to the test species .
Activities planned for 1990 are:
(1) To do the annual site clean-up work.
(2) To pursue feasible improvements to the water treatment and
sludge handling process.
1
Terry Tunnel Area - Plate No. 2
During the last three quarters of 1989 and the first quarter of
1990 , no additional acreage was disturbed and no acreage was , r ; r
reclaimed .
Any trash accumulated at the site was removed.
The weir for measuring discharge volume was reset and made
adjustable so leveling could be done on a periodic basis.
-2-
