MAYFLOWER MILL AREA (continued)
(2) Boulder Creek (BC-1,BC-2) , Table 4 and Table 5
TSS , TDS and some dissolved metals appear to be generally
higher at BC2 below the tailings ponds.
(3) Engineering Office Monitoring Wells (EOMW-1,EOMW-2) Table
6 and Table 7 , Figure 1
The levels in the wells were up approximately three feet in
October 1989 possibly due to the irrigation of the reclaimed
area adjacent to the wells. Dissolved metals were very low
at this time although TDS was up. May 1990 water levels
were back down to a more normal level with some increase in
TDS . Dissolved metals of the extremely high levels reported
for October 1988 were never repeated (Zinc 10. 2mg/l and
5. 6mg/1 ) and are attributed to faulty filtering procedure.
(4) Tailings Pond 3 Monitoring Wells (TP3-07,04) Figure 2
Levels in these wells showed little variation in the last
year .
(5) Animas River (AR3 . 5, AR-4) Tables 8 and Table 9
A second spring sampling at low water in May 1989 showed no
significant difference in dissolved metals and TSS from the
April. 1989 sample . Data collected at these sites does not
show a trend in concentrations above and below the Mill
area. The downstream site actually shows lower
concentrations of dissolved metals in April 1989 and October
1989; higher concentrations in May 1989 and May 1990 . Many
metals such as Cu, Cr , Pb, and Hg are low or non detectable
in AR4 .
A bioassay of AR3 . 5 was done in Spring 1990 in conjunction
with the lst quarter Biomonitoring of MF002 . The river
water was determined to be toxic with a Fathead Minnow LC
50>100% but a Ceriodaphnia dubia LC50=24% . It is likely
that the toxicity of the Animas varies season to season and
with run off events . It was determined that it was toxic
enough, however , at this site above the mill to use
reconstituted lab water as the dilution eater in MF002
Bioassays. AR3 . 5 will be sampled with every MF002 Bioassay
to set dilution water hardness for the MF002 biotests .
-8-
