ABSTRACT <br /> Sunnyside Gold has developed a permanent "open-pit waste" <br /> disposal plan based on utilizing the open-pit waste as filler <br /> material to reclaim the Lake Emma hole . <br /> Acid Base Potential (ABP) tests were conducted on a variety of <br /> soil and rock in Sunnyside Basin during the summer of 1988 . <br /> These tests show: the natural overburden to have a slight acid <br /> potential ; the open-pit waste to be variable but generally acidic <br /> in potential ; and the material excavated from the Diversion <br /> Trench in 1981 to have a basic or neutralization potential . <br /> The basic plan is to place the "open-pit" waste in the Lake Emma <br /> hole such that its contact with water is minimized . Any water <br /> that does pass through or contact material with negative acid <br /> base potential will also contact material with a net <br /> neutralization potential . The plan consists of : a graded cap of <br /> relatively impermeable material to direct surface runoff past the <br /> waste; constructing a drainage path of rock with a net <br /> neutralization potential around the perimeter of the fill for <br /> subsurface water; creating a buffer zone of material with <br /> neutralization potential to buffer the effects of any water that <br /> might penetrate the zone of negative acid base potential ; <br /> utilizing an existing buffer zone for the same purpose; using a <br /> mixture of "open-pit" waste and rock with a net neutralization <br /> potential to fill the underground void that cannot be reached by <br /> construction equipment. <br /> - 1 - <br />
