During construction, the fill will be mounded to account for
estimated settlement. Calculations for expected settlement were
included in Appendix "l-B" of the consolidated permit document.
These calculations allow for a maximum settlement of four feet at
the maximum fill. depth of just over 400 feet. This corresponds
to approximately one foot of settlement for each 100 feet of
fill . The final as-constructed grade will be based on this
factor.
The area below the proposed buffer zone is composed primarily of
the 2580 and 2590 scopes . A mixture of open-pit waste and
material from the Diversion Trench will be used to fill this
void. It is not known whether all of the stockpiled trench rock
will be available for fill . A portion of it may have been buried
under lake sediments during construction of the Diversion Berm.
If this is the case, additional trench rock may be excavated from
the northern end of the trench. As noted above, the material
from the Diversion Trench has a net neutralization potential . By
mixing these two types of rock, any water entering the fill will
be exposed to both types of rock. In addition to this , the water
will contact a large volume of talus (neutralization
potential = +29 . 0) in the bottom of the 2590 stope . This talus
has sloughed into the lake hole as a result of slope instability
caused by underground mining. The talus slope will continue to
slough until it is stabilized naturally or by reclamation of the
lake hole .
- 9 -
