EPA File No. CO5000- 03745, San Juan County, Colorado
3rd Quarter 1999 Report (July — September)
Page 2
included with this report. The analytical results for the 2nd Quarter, June 26,
1999, sample are also included. The Terry Tunnel bulkhead samples have
had a high pH (11 -12) since pump back from the settling ponds was started
even though no alkaline material has been added. It appears that lime (either
pumped in previously or stacked against the bulkhead) is being activated or
stirred up from the pumping.
Inspection of the bulkhead and immediate tunnel area did not reveal any
reason for concern or give any indication that the bulkhead is not performing
as designed. The bulkhead valve remained open to accept pump back from
the Terry Tunnel settling ponds to eliminate any potential for pond
discharge.
American Tunnel Bulkhead
The American Tunnel bulkhead was inspected, gage pressure readings taken,
and fluid samples analyzed for pH, conductivity, and temperature more
frequently than the requirements of Items 3. This information is attached.
Site inspections have not revealed any indication that the bulkhead is
performing other than as designed.
