May 22, 2012 C- 1981 - 019 /Colowyo Coal Mine RDZ
Other observations concerning the ponds:
• Prospect pond has a large delta of sediment, which appears to be growing. As noted before, this sediment
is slated for cleaning in 2012.
West Taylor Pond also has a large delta of sediment, which should be removed in 2012.
The culvert above the flume for the West Pit Pond has been repaired.
The erosion problem in Prospect Ditch was observed again. Some of the channel below the eroding section was
observed and appears to be in satisfactory condition.
The perimeter ditch above Prospect Pond was found to be in good shape.
GENERAL MINE PLAN COMPLANCE:
The mine was found to be in general compliance with the permit.
ROADS — Rule 4.03:
All haul roads were in good shape.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
h1 the recently reclaimed areas of West Pit, vegetation is still sparse in many areas, but some new growth was
observed.
In the East Pit reclamation area, pennycress and other vegetation is emerging in areas seeded in the spring of 2011.
Some areas exhibited very good surface roughening.
Also in the East Pit area, contour ditches have been added and existing ditches have been repaired. A slope along
one of the new ditches was measured at two percent, which is the specification.
Near the West Taylor Pond, weeds were observed on both sides of the creek above the pond: cheat grass was seen
on the west side, Houndstongue was seen on the east side.
SLIDES and DAMAGE - Rule 4.12:
The slump above the East Taylor Pond has appeared to stabilize. It is recommended that CCC staff check the
grade of the contour ditch above this area to determine if a low spot is the cause of a seep, which could have
created the slump.
SUPPORT FACILITIES - Rule 4.04:
No problems were identified at the facilities area.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 9
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 3 of 12
