RECLAMATION - BENCHES
within the flattened area of the bench, a small ditch will be constructed. The
objective is to improve surface drainage so as to prevent surface water from
entering the fill.
The area of the bench will be scarified and seeded with the approved 10,000'
seed mix.
No. 3 Bench
Geo-Hydro's Documentation:
• The No. 3 Bench lies primarily in a small saddle. There are cuts on the east
and west sides of the bench and major fills on the north and south sides.
The west cut is in Mesaverde sandstones and shales, except for a small
portion of colluvium at the north end, adjacent to a broad avalanche gully.
The height of the cut ranges from 30' to approximately 150 '. The
near-vertical rock cut experiences minor severe rockfall. Moderate
sloughing occurs in the colluvium of the natural slope of the avalanche gully.
Only very minor cuts have been made east of the bench to provide storage
space behind the lamphouse.
• The north bench fill is flat and irregular over the bench area. It has an
approximate height of up to 250 ', and a slope of 400. An area of outwash is
present at the toe of the fill. The east bench fill is up to 150 ' in height,
extending down to the road below. These fill slopes are subject to severe
rilling and erosion.
Reclamation - Application of Methods
A buttress will be constructed along the toe of the cut in order to increase the
cut's long-term stability.
As indicated in the Reclamation description of the permit application, buildings
still remaining at the site on closure of the mine, as well as foundations, will be
utilized in construction of the buttress. The foundations will be rubblized and,
together with the dismantled structures, placed against the toe of each cut,
along the length of the toe, together with any rock and/or soil which has fallen
from the crest of the cut.
12
