RECLAMATION - BENCHES
No. 2 Bench
Geo-Hydro's Documentation:
• No. 2 Bench is a small cut and fill bench, approximately 400' long, to the
northeast of Mine No. 1.
• The cut is along the northwest edge of the bench, in Mesaverde sandstone
and shale. The cut ranges from 20' to 50' in height and 500 to 900 in slope
angle. Minor to moderate sloughing and rockfall are present in the cut.
Above the cut is a sloping berm for the conveyor from Mine No. 1.
The fill below the bench, to the southeast and northeast has a maximum
height of 20', and a slope angle of 300 to 350. The fill is probably a shallow
sliver, except perhaps at the north end of the bench.
Reclamation -Application of Methods
A buttress will be constructed along the base of the cut.
Buildings still remaining at the site on closure of the mine, as well as
foundations, will be utilized in construction of the buttress. The foundations will
be rubblized and, together with the dismantled structures, placed against the
toe of each cut, along the length of the toe, together with any rock and/or soil
which has fallen from the crest of the cut.
Material will then be placed over the rubble, compacted and contoured. Rock
from the crest of each cut will be allowed to fall on the buttress. It is anticipated
that material from reclamation on the fill at the bench will be utilized in
constructing the buttress for the toe.
The dimensions of the buttress will be determined by considerations of stability,
so as to allow a factor of safety of 1.3.
Further disturbance to the crest of the cut is not contemplated. Along the
perimeter of the bench, the angle of the edge will be flattened to a slope of
1.5:1, or flatter. Material taken from flattening the perimeter of the bench will be
used in construction of the buttress along the cut.
In order to increase the stability of the fill, a berm will be constructed above the
flattened slope around the outside perimeter of the bench. Further back, and
11
