of the mine (s) where development of coal in the "Middle"
Seam (No. 2 Mine) has occurred vertically above complete-
ly mined portions of the "B" bed (No. 1 Mine) . One sector,
in Plainview, is about 800 feet wide along the strike of
the beds and extends 5000 feet down dip. In excess of
eight feet of coal been mined from the lower bed. The
beds are separated by 400 by 450 feet of rock formations.
The cropline is approximately parallel to the contour of
the terrain and the seams dip westward at about 10 degrees .
Although the inspected land lies east of the federal lease,
geologic conditions project continuously toward the federal
land.
The ground surface examined is very mountainous terrain ly-
ing between drainages which are about 1/2 mile apart on the
east face of Huntsman Ridge. The drainage channels have
incised deeply into the slope and are not traversable on
foot due to repetition of near-vertical bluffs and incom-
petent rocks. The erosion pattern has created a ridge upon
each side of the drainage, and in the inspection area this
results in a relatively uniform slope between the ridges.
The average steepness of the ridge lines is about 21
degrees , and the average steepness of the slope area is
between 38 and 40 degrees. However, the profile of both
types of terrain is broken by vertical outcrops sufficiently
high to necessitate switching back and forth to attain access.
-3-
