COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
Water Quality Control Division
Rationale - Page 8
PERMIT NUMBER: CO-0000396
DISCUSSION AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS: (Continued)
TABLE 6
CALCULATION OF SALT LOAD (Continued)
Discharge Point 005 j I1-IIv
Date TDS Flow Load
(mg/1 ) (cfs) (tons/day)
1/78-47/78 2416 .668 4.35
4/78-7/78 1803 .20 •97
10/78-1/79 2300 .20 1 .24
7/79-10/79 2850 .23 1 .77
10/79-1/80 2132 . 15 .86
4/80-7/80 852 .09 .21
7/80-10/80 3330 .09 .81
7/81-9/81 3700 . 18 1 .80
Average Value 1 . 50
Discharge points 003, 004 and 005 each discharge
approximately 4 days per week over a period of
6 months, or approximately 103 days per year. The
total average salt load from the combined discharge
multiplied by the total number of days discharging
gives the total expected yearly salt load to the
Colorado River System.
Total Daily salt load = 1 . 50*+1 . 16*+.058*
(003,004 and 005)
= 2. 718 tons per day
2.718 tons/day x 103 days/year=279.9 tons/year
'Values obtained from table 6
Further, if the worst case (103 days/year discharge
is assumed for 001 , a further increase of 26.5 tong
year is given to the salt load. The total salt
load from the facility is calculated to be:
279.9 tons/year + 26.5 tons/year = 306 tons/year.
This value is less than the 350 tons/year maximum
provided for under the Colorado River Salinity
Regulations. Thus, the permittee will not be
required to do a study to consider the economic
feasibility of salt removal . However, in spite
of this waiver, quarterly monitoring for salinity
will still be required. It should be noted that
the salt contributions from all of the sedimentatic
ponds except 001 were considered to be negligible
since none of the points 006 thru 018 has had a
discharge under the previous permit. Discharge
Point 001 has had a discharge and the 103 day/year
discharge frequency was used as a worst possible
