Coal Basin is a typical Aspen-Conifer forest
with the following vegetation types :
Douglas Fir 360 Acres
Spruce Fir 1 , 120 Acres
Aspen 3 , 710 Acres
Non-Forested (Grass 9 , 450 Acres
and/or rock areas)
Total 14 , 640 Acres
The Thompson Creek Land Use Plan of the U . S .
Forest Service identified six "Ecological Land Units" (ELUs)
in and adjacent to the permit area . (See Figure III-I-2 and
Appendix III-I-2) An ELU is identified by its vegetative ,
geomorphic and wildlife characteristics .
The ELUs identified within and adjacent to
the permit area are :
ELU #1
Geomorphology : Mountain sideslopes . Slopes are
generally in the 16-40% range . Erosion hazard and
mass movement potentials are moderate . Soils are
forming from basalts , sandstones, siltstones and
shales . The unit is the source of high quality
water with potential to increase water yields
through vegetative manipulation . Only lst and 2nd
order streams because of the high position on the
landscape.
ELU #2
Geomorphology : Mountain sideslopes . The slopes
are generally in the 16-40% range . Erosion hazards
are moderate and mass movement potential is
moderate to high . Soils are forming from basalts ,
sandstones , siltstones and shales . The unit is a
source of high quality water with potential to
increase yields through vegetative manipulation .
This unit contains first and second order streams .
Vegetation: The unit consists of seral aspen
communities . Production potential is high and the
revegetation potential is moderate .
r
