3 . Wildlife - Permit and adjacent areas
a . Habitat
The permit and adjacent areas are situated in
Coal Basin, a northwest trending anticline which is located
near the southern end of the Piceance Basin . The area is on
the eastern boundary of the Colorado Plateau of the southern
Rocky Mountains .
The Coal Basin mine complex is drained by
Coal Creek and its tributaries (Figure III-I-1) . Coal Creek
drains into the Crystal River at Redstone, Colorado , and
flows northward to the confluence of the Roaring Fork River
near Carbondale, Colorado . The Roaring Fork flows northward
from Carbondale and discharges to the Colorado River at
Glenwood Springs .
Topographically, the area is rugged , with
elevations varying from about 7 , 180 ' where Coal Creek enters
the Crystal to 11 , 852 ' at the summit of Huntsman Ridge,
between Coal Basin' s Dutch Creek No . 1 and L . S . Wood No . 3
Mine entries .
Vegetation is sparse along the rock outcrops
and steep slopes- but becomes more abundant along the stream
channels . Gently sloping ground is limited almost entirely
to high glaciated bowls in the southern part of the permit
area and a few landslide or slumpage areas , most notably in
the Spring Creek and Porcupine Creek drainage areas . (See
Section H of this Chapter , Vegetation Information)
-3-
