Aquatic life in the Coal Creek drainage is in the
process of reestablishing itself after being practically
eliminated by a 100-year flood event which occurred in 1977 .
Benthic species are reestablishing in Coal Creek, and water
quality samples show Coal Creek is suitable to support a
fish population.
Water quality samples of Bear Creek, which drains
an area undisturbed by mining activity, show water quality
comparable to that of Coal Creek and Dutch Creek, which
drain the disturbed areas of Coal Basin, indicating no
substantial adverse effects by mining on the aquatic habitat .
2 .
