( 2) Mammals
Other mammals identified in the permit
and adjacent areas include bear , beaver, coyote, fox, marmots
(short and longhaired) , bobcat , skunk, racoon, weasel ,
porcupine, and rabbit .
The most common mammal is the bear , a
year-around resident of the basin . Although the bear is a
secretive animal, two or three are usually sighted each
year .
Local conservation officers have sighted
bear in the area as well , and on one occasion, relocated a bear
in the Coal Basin because the animal had been causing
problems for residents at lower elevations . Occasionally,
bear will attempt to find food near the mine facilities .
Two of the most common small-game mammal
species in the permit area are the cottontail rabbit and the
snowshoe hare . Both are year-around residents because the
habitat is excellent . Rabbits , which provide a prey base
for other predators , feed on the abundant grasses and forbs
during the warmer months , and on roots and tall grasses in
the winter .
The U . S . F . S . Thompson Creek Land Use
Plan identified three Ecological Land Units in the Coal
Basin, which might provide habitat for the following mammals ,
although not all have been sighted :
-li-
