form a representative sample . The samples were air-dried
and subjected to chemical analysis . The Mancos shale
samples were coarsely ground before they were analysed .
Methods :
Salinity Extract - Distilled water was measured
into the samples to the point of saturation to obtain
saturation percentages . After determining the pH of the
pastes , they were subjected to vacuum filtration and the
electrical conductivity of the extracts were determined .
Calcium, magnesium and sodium concentrations were measured
by atomic absorption spectroscopy, and the sodium absorption
ratios were calculated from the ensuing data .
Fertility Components - The samples were extracted
with an ammonium bicarbonate - DTPA solution . Nitrate-
nitrogen and phosphorus were determined colorimetrically and
potassium, iron, manganese, copper and zinc concentrations
were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy .
Percent Organic Matter - Organic matter content of
the material was determined by digestion with acid and sub-
sequent ferrous sulfate titration .
-22-
