COAL BASIN MINE PERMIT APPLICATION
MID-CONTINENT RESOURCES , INC .
CARBONDALE , COLORADO
APPENDIX III-G-1
SOIL TESTING SOURCES AND METHODS
A Class IV equivalent soil survey was conducted in the
summer of 1980 in Coal Basin, which is situated some four
miles west of Redstone, in Pitkin County, Colorado .
The survey was conducted by SOLTESCO , P . 0 . Box 3547 ,
Grand Junction, CO 81502, under the direction of Dan
Champion (Certified Soil Scientist) .
Areas which are and will remain undisturbed by the mine
operations were evaluated using reconnaisance soil aerial
mapping techniques .
Disturbed areas were evaluated by "ground-truth" field
surveys and soil laboratory analyses . The detailed soil
surveys include:
- Evaluation of the future coal refuse disposal area
and the rock tunnel disposal area
- Soil tests from portal platforms and random samples
from within the permit area .
SOLTESCO also took soil samples in the rock tunnel
portal area in September , 1979 in preparation for face-up
work on that project .
Fourteen soil samples were taken at this time for
analysis . At each point , about 6 core samples were taken to
the depth of the restricting boulder layer and combined to
-21-
