RO--Sandstone rock outcroppings ; several small
areas of sandstone rock have been exposed .
DA--Disturbed areas ; the disturbed areas of the
Coal Basin area consist of road cuts , mine openings and
pads , refuse piles , operations and wash plant area .
3 . Soil horizons
The "A" and "B" horizons found near the disturbed
areas in of Coal Basin are, for the most part , indistinct
and undifferentiated , due to the shallowness of the soil .
Soil horizon characteristics of the predominant
soils are :
Mancos Silt Loam: Has no soil horizons . Topsoil
and subsoils have eroded away . The Mancos Silt Loam is
merely a weathered version of the Mancos Shale which it
directly overlies , with the difference being that of texture,
not of composition .
Sandv Loam: Tends to be too shallow in Coal Basin
for distinct soil horizons , particularly as it occurs on the
steeper slopes , as it does near the Nos . 1 , 2, 3 and 5 :Mine
portals and mine haul roads .
Alluvial Sandy Loam: Alluvial Sandy Loam is a
deeper soil than either of the other predominant soil types ,
and thus exhibits the greatest probability for soil horizons .
However , as found in the tunnel area, (the only area of
surface disturbance, except the refuse pile, since passage
of P . L . 95-87) the Alluvial Sandy Loam had nearly indistin-
guishable soil 'horizons .
-4-
