R--Sandstone rock; this is actually part of an old
sandstone uplift occurring generally at 9500 ' elevation and
above . It is barren and only coarse, thin soil covers it in
a very few places .
Al--Alluvial sandy loam; distinction is made
between this soil type and SL simply because the Al soil is
considerably thicker than the SL soil . It is found along
and in stream beds and on relatively flat plains where
greater material deposition has occurred . Organic matter
content is higher than in the SL soil also . It qualifies as
a boralfic histosol .
Ma--Mancos silt loam; this soil occurs in only one
significant area near the operations area . It is a soil
formed in place after the overburden has eroded away to
expose the Mancos shale, allowing it to weather into a silt
loam. Vegetation is sparse on this series . It is grey in
color .
RP--Refuse pile; coal refuse piles are scattered
throughout the area . The only active one of any consequence
appears to be near the wash plant at the operations area .
They are composed of mixed soil and coal .
RS--Red sandy loam; there are only two small areas
of this soil near the road leading to the Bear Creek Mine .
The coloration probably occurs from the red sandstone forma-
tion found near Redstone, Colorado . Otherwise it is similar
to the SL series , but contains a small aruount of crystalline
rock fragments as well as sandstone fragments .
-3-
