Basin, afforded access for souvenier hunters , hikers and
riders , and those seeking to enjoy the scenery.
Mining has not , in itself , precluded the
recreational use . However , as a safety measure , Mid-Continent
restricts access to :wine facilities and roads , and does not
allow hunting . As a result , although some hiking , riding
and cross-country skiing is done in the basin, principally
along Coal Creek, the use is somewhat limited .
The post-mining land use will emphasize the
recreatonal use, not only for the summer months , but during
the winter as well . Mid-Continent ' s proposed post-mining
recreational use will capitalize on the natural beauty and
historic interest of the Coal Basin, and will be compatible
with the rangeland and wildlife uses as well .
Summer use after mining will be essentially
the same as before mining by Mid-Continent , namely hiking ,
riding, scenic enjoyment . Winter use is proposed in accordance
with the U. S . Forest Service ' Thompson Creek Land Use Plan,
in which the preferred alternative in Coal Basin is to
"forego developments other than those compatible with winter
sports" and which "protects the Coal Basin inventoried ski
area for future development of 3000 PAOT_ .
