Small stockponds have been constructed by the <br /> U . S . Forest Service and the grazing permittees who use the <br /> surface of the land in Coal Basin and on the west and south <br /> slopes of Huntsman Ridge , which overlie underground workings . <br /> The fire protection system in Coal Basin <br /> utilizes a 250 , 000 gallon tank, 4" lines and fire hydrants , <br /> using water from the basin. <br /> Flood control efforts in Coal Basin include <br /> construction of a flume to carry Dutch Creek through the <br /> preparation plant complex. In addition, various earthen <br /> dikes have been constructed at points along Dutch and Coal <br /> Creeks to control spring runoff and/or high intensity spring <br /> and summer storms . <br /> Water supply for the Coal Basin facilities <br /> comes from seven (7) producing wells in the Coal Creek and <br /> Dutch Creek drainages . <br /> d . Recreation <br /> The recreational use which preceded the Mid- <br /> Continent operation included game hunting . The Indians <br /> hunted the basin prior to mining in 1900 , and meat for the <br /> mining camp , Coal Basin , was also supplied from game hunting. <br /> After closure of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Co . mining opera- <br /> Lion, and prior to opening of the Mid-Continent operation, <br /> game hunting continued on a recreational basis . <br /> In addition, the original railroad bed <br /> between Redstone and the site of the mining camp , Coal <br /> 11 <br />
