The short-term and long-term plans regarding dust control at the Climax
Mine are logistically complex but fairly straightforward. In the short term,
or that period between snow melt in 1988 and the end of final reclamation, we
plan to continue treating the dry, exposed areas with Coherex in an annual ,
on-going program. Those areas requiring treatment will be reduced as the
permanent solutions are implemented. Over the long term, the four tailing dams
will be covered with a rock blanket which will eliminate the blowing tailing
from those areas. In the pane, these dam faces have beLrf the major
contributors to the dust problem. The flats or tops of the tailing ponds will
be stabilized partially with topsoil and vegetation, and partially with rock
or water depending on activity at the minesite over the course of the next
20-30 years. Initial work on the long-term solution to the tailing dams in the
form of engineering design already is underway. Actual construction and
placement of rock on the dam faces is scheduled to commence in 1988 and be
completed around 1996. This plan will be completed regardless of the level of
mine operation.
Again, we appreciate your letter and hope that we have answered your
questions to your satisfaction. We want to assure you that the Climax Mine
tailing is non-hazardous and poses no chemical health hazard. We are committed
to and are working very hard at controlling dust blowing from our tailing
ponds in both the short and the long terms. If you desire additional
information or have any suggestions, please feel free to call or stop by our
mine office.
