BANTA, Director
December 15, 1987
Mr. John D. Farr
Arrow Insurance Management, Inc.
P.O. Box 250
695 Summit Blvd.
Frisco, Colorado 80443
Re: Amax Tailings on North Ten Mile, Summit County
Dear Mr. Farr:
Thank you for your letter regarding the problem with blowing tailings at the
Climax Mine. We are well aware of the problem and have been working with
Climax and the Colorado Department of Health, Air Pollution Control Division
on both short term action and long term site reclamation. The Air Pollution
Control Division approved a dust suppression plan in December, 1986 which was
implemented for the first time in 1987. This plan will probably be modified
as necessary however you may want to contact the Air Pollution Control
Division for more information. I am forwarding a copy of your letter to that
agency.
We have found that most of the dust generation occurs on the dam faces and the
long term reclamation plan calls for covering these faces with rock. The
company has indicated that they will begin implementing this part of the plan
in 1988. The currently approved reclamation plan for the tailings calls for
covering the tailings with waste rock and then depositing a mixture of wood
chips and sewage sludge on the rock. This would. be followed by seeding and
hopefully vegetation establishment.
I hope I have provided you with all the information you need. If you have any
questions or need any additional information, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Anne C.
