Plan for Augmentation: Mining Phase
Depletions
During mining of the Warren Gravel Pit, no surface water will be exposed as the pit will
continuously be de- watered at a rate of 2,000 gallons per minute. The discharge from the pit will
be into a tail ditch that will return the discharged water to the Gunnison River approximately 2500
feet from the mining area.
Depletions for moisture lost in the mined material has been calculated to be 4% of the
material mined below the water table. It has been estimated that approximately 94,000 tons of
material, or 15,666 tons per month, will be mined per year from April through September and all
of the material will be mined below the water table. It has been calculated that moisture will be
lost in the mined material in the amount to 0.46 acre -feet per month totaling 2.76 acre - feet per
year. Dust suppression will be supplied by dewatering of the gravel pit and has been estimated to
be 3,000 gallon per day, five days per week, also during the months of April through September.
Dust suppression has been calculated to total 0.20 -0.21 acre-feet per month or 1.23 acre-feet per
year. All material will be washed on -site with water consumption for washing calculated at
120,000 gallons per day. Gravel washing will occur 5 days per week during the months of April
through September. Gravel washing has been calculated to total between 8.10 and 8.47 acre -ffet
per month or 49.71 acre-fret per year.
Replacement of Out of Priority Depletions
Consumptive use credits are claimed for irrigation under the Bona Fide Ditch. The Bona
Fide Ditch was decreed on February 25, 1903, with an appropriation date of November 30, 1881,
for 65.0 cfs of water to be diverted from the Gunnison River. The point of diversion of the ditch
is in the SENWSE of Section 1, 3500 feet east of the west section line and 1700 feet north of the
south section line in Section 1, T15S, R95W. The Bona Fide Ditch, administration number
18729.11657, is senior in priority to the Redlands Power Canal, the calling water right on the
Gunnison River, administration number 22283.20300. Appendix B contains historical diversion
records for the Bona Fide Ditch as well as water rights data.
The Bona Fide Ditch Company has issued 500 shares in the ditch and GMI owns 30 of
those shares. The Bona Fide Ditch has historically enjoyed a full water supply and it has been
calculated that 1 share of Bona Fide Ditch water equates to 0.13 cfs. The duty of water in the
Delta area is 1 cfs to 40 acres, therefore, 1 share of Bona Fide ditch water can adequately irrigate
5.2 acres and 7.5 shares, or 0.975 cfs, of the 30 shares that GMI owns have historically irrigated
the 40 acres that will be developed for gravel mining.
Historical irrigation of the gravel mining area has primarily been in alfalfa hay and
irrigation credits were calculated for the irrigation season of April through October in the amount
of 61.97 acre -feet. Table 1 in Appendix C contains a calculation of water consumption for alfalfa
hay. The Division of Water Resources TR21 spreadsheet was used in calculated the
evapotranspiration for alfalfa hay in Delta, Colorado. During the initial mining period, 20 acres
2
